#1 Consider fireworks set off during the day
Take your dog for a longer walk during the day, unless there are already loud banging noises during the day. In such cases, a shorter walk is more advisable. Ideally, plan the last walk before 9 p.m. and keep your dog on a lead at all times. The popping noises could frighten him and cause him to run away. If your cat is afraid of fireworks, don't let them outside on New Year's Eve. Instead, provide a safe and quiet environment in the house.
"As a precaution, dogs should always be kept on a (tow) lead on and around New Year's Eve! Even if he wasn't afraid beforehand - a surprise bang can always be a fear trigger!“

#2 Never leave an anxious pet alone
Stay at home if your pet is afraid of fireworks. Leaving it alone can have unpleasant and lasting consequences. If you really can't be at home, make sure that a trusted person looks after them. For example, hire a caregiver or a family member/friend.
#3 Close all curtains and windows
Close all curtains when fireworks are going off outside. The lights cannot be categorized by an animal and increase stress. Close the windows to muffle any noise from outside.
#4 Care for distraction
Distraction helps to reduce stress. Give your dog or cat something to chew on and entertain them with great dog toys or cat toys. This will make your pet sleepier in the evening. The pleasant distraction is also associated with the fireworks and provides a positive stimulus.
#5 Create a safe and quiet place for your pet
Let your pet choose a quiet place to lie down. It will feel most comfortable in this place. Give your pet a good cuddle to make it feel safe. Put its familiar cuddly toy or toy next to it.
#6 Stay calm and behave as always
Pets are very attentive to their owners, especially in anxiety-provoking situations. As long as you stay calm and support your dog or cat, this will ease the anxiety somewhat. Otherwise, behave as you always do. Pets are used to your routines. If you throw these routines overboard, it will confuse them.
#7 Don't punish your pet
Pets may react differently due to stress. For example, it is not uncommon for them to suddenly want to take care of their needs in the house or run away. Don't punish your pet. Be affectionate and give extra attention by cuddling more, if your pet naturally allows it.
#8 Play quiet music
Quiet background music can help to drown out the sound of the fireworks. Play the music at a medium volume and stick to a calm genre, such as classical music. You can find special music lists for dogs and cats on Spotify!
If your pet continues to show extreme fear of fireworks despite all these measures, it is crucial to seek professional help. The fear of fireworks can have lasting effects on your pet's well-being. In such cases, we recommend consulting a vet or a behavioral therapist who specializes in pets in order to develop individually tailored solutions and treatment strategies.
